What HS Code Fix can't do

Read this before relying on it. Plain answers, no fine print.

• It does not classify goods for you legally. Every HS code it shows is a suggestion. You, the shipper, are responsible for the code on your customs form. If a product is unusual, high-value or regulated, ask a customs broker.
• 6 digits only. It writes the international 6-digit HS code. It does not add the extra national digits (US 10-digit HTS, EU 8-digit CN, UK 10-digit). Shopify and most carriers only need 6.
• About half the suggestions are wrong. Measured 2026-09-23 on 100 real listings from public Shopify stores, 25 each of clothing, food, homeware and electronics. Every code was set by hand against the official tariff before the app saw them, and the list was locked before the test ran. The app gave no code for 5 of the 100. Of the 95 codes it did give, 55% were not the best code (strict), and 45% were wrong even counting every code a careful person could defend from the listing (lenient). Electronics is the worst: 19 of 23 strict wrong. This replaces the earlier 72% and 35%, which came from 25 products of a single store. Read every suggestion before you accept it.
• Suggestions come from the product title and description, and those often don't say what a thing is made of. HS codes turn on material and construction — steel, aluminium and plastic bottles are three different codes. A listing that says "go with the flow" and never says "stainless steel" cannot be classified correctly by anything, us included. In our first, smaller check, four of the seven wrong codes were this. The other three stated their material and we got them wrong anyway. Saying the material in the description helps; it is not a cure.
• It validates against the US tariff list. The first 6 digits are the same worldwide, but the app cannot confirm a code is correct for your specific product — only that it exists.
• Country of origin is never guessed. Only you know where a product was made. The app shows the gap and, on Pro, writes the country you pick to every product missing one — but the choice is always yours.
• Weight is never guessed for the same reason.
• A scan reads the first 2,000 products. Bigger catalogs are scanned up to that point and the app says so on screen. AI suggestions are capped too: on Free, 20 products that get a code, ever (a product it could not classify does not count, up to 40 tries in all); on Pro, 1,000 per calendar month. The counts are shown in the app.
• Undo clears the app's own writes, and only those. It empties the HS code field on items still carrying exactly the code this app wrote. If you or another app changed that field afterwards, undo leaves it alone — it will not overwrite a later edit, and it does not restore whatever was there before.
• No storefront changes, no checkout changes, no duty calculation. It fixes catalog data. Duties and taxes at checkout are Shopify Managed Markets or your carrier.
